From the start of the year through May 2023, Bulgaria saw an influx of foreign direct investment (FDI) amounting to 1.75 billion euros, corresponding to 1.9% of its GDP. This represents a substantial increase from 922.7 million euros received during the same timeframe in 2022, as reported by the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB). The FDI came in various forms: equity investments, including those in the real estate sector, totaled 242.6 million euros; earnings that were reinvested accounted for 983.1 million euros. Despite a million-euro outflow from foreign real estate investments, debt instrument investments contributed 522 million euros to the inflows. Countries such as the Netherlands, Greece, and Belgium were the primary investors, injecting 567.1 million, 326.7 million, and 142.2 million euros respectively, while Italy showed a significant outflow of 86 million euros. Additionally, Bulgarian investments abroad witnessed an increase, amounting to 152.9 million euros within this period.
