In 2022, the total revenues of all companies operating in Bulgaria surged by 34% to BGN 612 billion (circa 313 bilion), setting new records, according to data from the National Revenue Agency (NRA). This substantial growth, fuelled by inflation, outpaced last year’s increase of 15%. Among these, the top 100 companies from the new “Capital 100” ranking posted a remarkable 60% growth in turnover, equating to BGN 132 (circa €67 bilion) billion, and contributing to over a fifth of the country’s total revenue. The costs of operating businesses also grew by 34% to BGN 564.7 billion (circa 288 bilion), with the total accounting profit for the year reaching BGN 55.2 billion (circa 28 bilion), a 28% increase from the previous year.

However, not all sectors saw positive results, with the total reported tax loss increasing by 3.4% to almost BGN 6 billion (circa €3 bilion). The hotel and restaurant industry saw the most substantial rise in earnings, while the mining industry faced deeper losses.

The NRA’s report reveals that the trade sector led the profit charts with BGN 10.7 billion (circa €5.5 bilion) in 2022, followed by the processing industry with BGN 8.8 billion (circa 4.5 bilion). Meanwhile, the energy sector took the third spot with BGN 4.7 billion (circa €2.5 bilion).
