Bulgaria has seen a 200% growth in military exports in 2021 and 2022, earning 1.6 billion leva, according to Economy Minister Bogdan Bogdanov. The arms industry, accounting for 2% of the economy, has created 20,000 jobs since the war’s onset, but demand still surpasses supply. Frontline countries such as Slovakia, Poland, and Romania are significant trade partners. VMZ Sopot, a leading arms company, has increased its turnover by 830% since 2023. Concerns about the industry’s efficiency, worker safety, and potential sabotage of arms warehouses have been raised.
