In the first month of the 2023-2024 commercial year, Romania took the lead in wheat and barley exports within the EU, dispatching to third markets a total of 588,756 tons of wheat, which comprises over 25% of all European exports. Bulgaria, Poland, Germany, and France trailed in that order. Additionally, Romania led the league in barley exports, sending out 179,762 tons. Conversely, Romania’s wheat and barley imports were relatively modest, at 12,199 tons and 11,190 tons respectively. Nations such as Spain, Italy, Greece, Portugal, Slovenia, and Northern Ireland reported higher import quantities. Currently, a restriction is in place barring grain imports from Ukraine, a country ravaged by war, into Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, Poland, and Slovakia, with an extension planned until the end of the year. Despite this, the agriculture ministers from these countries are advocating for procedures that would facilitate the movement of Ukrainian grains without negatively impacting the agricultural sectors of the transit nations.
