PGE Energetyka Kolejowa and Łukasiewicz Research Network – Poznań Institute of Technology have signed a letter of intent to develop and promote hydrogen technology in the railway sector in Poland. The aim is to develop hydrogen-powered rail rolling stock and hydrogen refuelling infrastructure. The collaboration will modernize the WM-15A rail vehicle, including the introduction of hydrogen power system elements. PGE Energetyka Kolejowa will supply the hydrogen for the modernized train. The collaboration aims at decarbonizing railway transport and developing railways based on renewable energy sources. The experience gained will be used for further development of hydrogen railway station projects in Poland. The company has already launched a pilot hydrogen production installation at the Garbce Traction Substation and plans to supply various types of energy to the Polish railways, including green hydrogen.
