In a surprising twist, Poland has emerged as a leader in environmental motoring within the EU, primarily because of the widespread adoption of autogas. More than 16% of vehicles in Poland don’t rely on petrol or diesel, the top percentage among EU countries. These aren’t electric vehicles, but over 4 million cars powered by gas.
Data updated by Eurostat in July 2021 showed that only 83.7% of Polish cars operate on petrol or diesel engines. Even though the count of electric cars is relatively low (40.7 thousand fully electric and 80.2 thousand plug-in hybrids), Poland still tops the EU with the highest proportion of eco-friendly cars, totaling 4.2 million.
