The Nordic Investment Bank (NIB) and Rigas Siltums AS have agreed on a 10-year, EUR 20 million investment program to upgrade the district heating infrastructure in Rīga, Latvia. The total project cost is EUR 29 million, with NIB funding 70%. The project will be split into two parts: the first will modernize Rīga’s heat distribution systems, replacing obsolete pipelines and reducing energy losses. The expansion will also enable service for new customers and reduce air pollution. The second part aims to boost renewable energy generation, particularly sustainable biomass. This should result in an additional 53,000 MWh of renewable energy and a reduction of primary energy consumption by 29,000 MWh. The goal is for renewable energy to comprise 90% of the district heating supply in Riga by 2026.
