On monday Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó and his Kuwaiti counterpart, Sheikh Salem Abdullah Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, discussed a range of topics including the Ukraine war, terrorism, migration, and enhancing Hungarian-Kuwaiti cooperation during a meeting in Budapest. Both leaders expressed commitment to sovereignty and territorial integrity, and agreed on the need for a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict. Szijjártó highlighted the ongoing threat of terrorism and its linkage to migration flows, thanking Kuwait for its leading role in combating terrorism. He advocated for closer EU-Gulf ties, endorsing visa-free Schengen travel and a free trade agreement for Gulf Cooperation Council countries. Upcoming developments in bilateral relations include a nearing investment protection treaty, direct flights between Budapest and Kuwait City, and stronger energy cooperation involving Hungarian oil and gas company MOL’s chemical solution for environmentally friendly oil extraction. Trade turnover reached $33 million in 2022, and both countries aim to enhance relations in agriculture, food, and pharmaceutical sectors.
