Hungary plans to Establish Its Own Container Seaport in Italy

Localized in Trieste, Hungary-owned port is set to become a key link in the Chinese trade route.

Hungary is progressing towards creating its own seaport in Trieste, Italy, a step that advances the landlocked nation’s maritime reach. This port, anticipated to be a pivotal part of China’s New Silk Road, embodies the ambition of Hungary to contribute significantly to the Chinese-led initiative. The development of the Hungarian-owned terminal, approved by the Trieste port authorities, takes a leap forward from past years when plans stalled after the acquisition of a terminal at a defunct refinery.

The EU is contributing to the project, which entails the initial development stages of dredging the service channel and constructing a quay and a road connector. The terminal in Trieste, projected to handle up to 300,000 containers and 25,000 freight trains, is anticipated to be operational in three years, as per Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó.
