Bulgaria’s role in energy transit is gaining prominence, as revealed in a phone call between Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó, and Bulgarian President Rumen Radev. Szijjártó’s recent Facebook update stressed the pivotal conversation, which centered on deepening energy ties between the countries. Hungary’s increasing reliance on Bulgaria for natural gas transit was a focal point, especially with plans to boost gas imports from Azerbaijan and Turkey. Szijjártó mentioned, “The need for transit through Bulgaria is set to grow.” This was further reassured by President Radev, indicating Bulgaria’s commitment to support. Potential disruptions in gas supply through Ukraine were discussed, underscoring the Bulgarian-Serbian-Hungarian route’s crucial role.
Highlighting the evolving alliance, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, and Slovakia signed a memorandum concerning Azerbaijani natural gas delivery to Central Europe using the ‘Solidarity Ring’ pathway, spanning Turkey to Slovakia. Szijjártó praised Radev for fostering Hungary-Bulgaria ties over the years and acknowledged Bulgaria’s steadfast role in gas transit, stressing its significance to Hungary.
