There are places on earth that take your breath away. Without a doubt, the most beautiful ones are not created by man but by the power of nature. One such marvel of nature is the Blue Cave, which you can find in Croatia on the island of Biševo. What is it that makes this cave so remarkable?
This tiny island is located in the Adriatic Sea, five nautical miles from the neighboring and more famous island of Vis. During the off-season, the sleepy island is home to only about twenty inhabitants, most of whom are over the age of 65. However, when the warmer weather hits, Biševo sheds its calm, quiet ambiance and welcomes the throngs of tourists in search of the majestic natural phenomenon it is home to. Despite being one of the farthest islands from the mainland, it is still trendy among people coming to Croatia for vacation, attracting up to 2500 visitors per day.
Enchanting visitors for centuries
The official discovery of the Blue Cave was announced in 1884. At first, it was only accessible to locals, but it didn’t take long for it to turn into a huge tourist attraction. To reach it, it’s best to take a day trip from places like Split, Trogir, or Makarska. It can also be easily reached from the islands of Brač, Hvar, and Vis.
The cave is barely visible from the sea. You enter through a very small hole measuring less than two meters high. It is necessary to bend your torso and head when entering. The first part of the cave is dark, but after a while, the real magic is revealed to the eyes. The further into the cave, the more interesting it gets.
Keep in mind that you can’t enter the cave alone in a private boat. There are special boats with trained and knowledgeable guides who will take you into the unique attraction. All you have to do is purchase your entrance ticket, and you’re on your way to adventure.
Explore the blue world in Biševo cave
As the name suggests, the Blue Cave will surprise you with its unforgettable shade of blue, and this is where its uniqueness lies. This color is hard to describe in words – you have to see it with your own eyes to believe it. The sunlight coming through the opening of the cave reflects off of the sandy bottom, creating an excellent play of blue light that fills the cave and the clear waters below.
It is worth keeping in mind that it is best if you go to the cave before noon. This is very important if you want to admire it at its highest beauty. It’s in the hours between sunrise and noon that the water in the cave is the bluest and most stunning.
